Common Law Admission Test (CLAT)


Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is a federal examination for entrance to famous nationwide Law Universities in India. This test is written by the Intermediate or 12th class students to enter into a law universities for their graduation. On 11th May 2008, this exam was conducted for 1037 number of seats for applying seven schools all over India. On 19th May 2008, the first CLAT results are announced. This admission test held’s for two hours contains objective oriented questions on Basic Mathematics, General Knowledge, English, Logical and Legal Reasoning.

Before CLAT was introduced the law schools were conduct their own entrance test. The student has to prepare for different exams based on the law schools he wanted to apply. When any two tests dates are same then the student had to miss one test. Now national wide there are thirteen law schools are available, out of 13 universities 11 are given below:
  • National Law School of India University, Bangalore (NLSIU).
  • NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad (NALSAR).
  • National Law Institute University, Bhopal (NLIU).
  • The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata (WBNUJS).
  • National Law University, Jodhpur(NLU).
  • Hidayatullah National Law University, Raipur (HNLU).
  • Gujarat National Law University, Gandhinagar (GNLU).
  • Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University, Lucknow (RMLNLU).
  • Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Patiala (RGNUL).
  • Chanakya National Law University, Patna (CNLU).
  • National University of Advanced Legal Studies, Kochi (NUALS).
NLSI University is the first law school admitted the students through CLAT examination. From remaining thirteen law schools NL University from Delhi and NL University from Orissa will conduct their separate own entrance examination. The Law Universities which are utilizing CLAT score are A.P University of Law of Visakhapatnam, Jodhpur National University of Jodhpur, and Siddhartha Law College of Dehradun. Generally the CLAT examination will be conducted every year on May.

CLAT provides students a preference list. According to his/her desired college every student completes the preference list. According to the rank gained and preferences every student will allocated a seat. CLAT 2011 has made a vivid change on the system. The earlier system is to fill up the preferences of a student at the time of filling an application form. To make the system correct they are now giving the preference list after the students got their ranks.

CLAT is fulfilled with the eleven law schools participating every year on the base of supremacy. For the first time in 2008, National Law School of Bangalore was liable of conducting CLAT. Next year it was conducted by NALSAR University of Hyderabad. As an official organization, CLAT is handled by the law schools by forming two committees. There is a ‘Core Committee’, which includes the Directors or the Vice-Chancellors of the law schools and an Implementation Committee’ which includes n the Registrars of the law schools.

The Under-Graduate Programme Offered By The National Law Universities for 5 year integrated BA/B.Sc/B Psc/BBA/BCom LL.B (Hons) Degree Course.

Eligibility: To be eligible  to appear for CLAT-2011, a candidate should have passed his/her Higher Secondary School/Intermediate Examination (10+2) or its equivalent examination with not less than 50% marks in aggregate (45% in case of SC/ST/OBC and persons with Disability).~ Candidates who have appeared in the 10+2 examination and are awaiting results are also eligible to appear in the test.° Age of candidate should not be more than 20 years in case of General/OBC candidates (22 years in case of SC/ST and persons with Disability)~ as on 1st July, 2011.

The Post-Graduate Programme Offered In The National Law Universities for Two Year LL.M Degree Course.

Eligibility: To be eligible for appearing in CLAT-2011 a candidate should have obtained a LL.B/B.L. Degree or an equivalent degree from a recognised University with not less than 55% marks in aggregate (50% in case of SC/ST /OBC and persons with Disability). Candidates who have appeared in the qualifying degree examination and are awaiting results are also eligible to appear in the test.
